Reviews of the Doctor Who Meglos: Part OneA sentient alien plant Meglos intends to destroy the Planet Tigella by stealing the planet's power source . To help him in his plans he kidnaps and posses a human in order to impersonate the Doctor
This is a strange story from the classic series . Not so much strange in its premise but strange in the way the story is told . A talking cactus as a villain and inter-Galatic mercenaries running around studio bound exteriors gives the impression it's a season 17 script but is done in the hard SF manner of season 18 which gives the story a jarring quality . Watching it you get the impression that everything should be played for laughs and one wonders the fun previous script editor Douglas Adams might have had with the script along with the audience having a bit more fun but since Bidmead is now the script editor this will not be the case . What makes it even more puzzling is the type of word play seen as in the villain is a megalomaniac hence he's called Meglos . Charles Dickens used the same type of writing when naming characters but this certainly wasn't written by Dickens .That said I found myself enjoying Meglos much more than I remembered over 30 years ago . The serious tone is contentious but it gives us a few effective scenes .
Where it fails to a large extent is with the characterisation or rather the cast bringing their characters to screen . Jacqueline Hill will forever be known as Barbara Wright the first female companion and co-focus for the show in the early years and was a casting coup at the time but it wasn't until rewatching Meglos that I remembered she played another character which tells you something the impression her character Lexa leaves on the audience while the rest of the cast are rather bland and one wonders if camping it up might have helped a bit more . We also get to see JNT casting a relatively big name guest star in the shape of Bill Fraser which could have gone to any actor
In summary Meglos is a very routine story . Despite being universally rated the wooden spoon winner in every fan poll that year it's by no means terrible but like so many stories from the classic series lacks a little spark to stop it being both routine and totally forgettable . It also goes to show that doppleganger stories aren't well received in the show's history
